Teaching areas
My broader teaching experience includes mobile application development, cybersecurity, ethical hacking, Big Data Analytics, data science, artificial intelligence, business intelligence, software engineering, data warehousing, database systems, web development, and final-year project supervision.
I teach undergraduate and postgraduate computing students, with an emphasis on practical, industry-relevant learning. My teaching connects software development, data, cybersecurity, and applied problem-solving so that students can build both technical capability and confidence.
At UCOL, my current teaching is centred on mobile application development. I also contribute to teaching in cybersecurity and postgraduate Big Data Analytics.
Current teaching at UCOL
D303 Mobile Application Development
Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology (BICT), Year 3 · 2026–present
Students learn to design, develop, test, and evaluate mobile applications while considering user experience, data persistence, APIs, security, and real-world deployment.
D804 Advanced Mobile Application Solutions
Master of Information Technology · 2026–present
Students work with advanced mobile application architecture and development practices, including requirements analysis, accessibility, privacy, security, performance, testing, and deployment.
Teaching at the University of Fiji
As Associate Professor in Computing Science at the University of Fiji from August 2024 to July 2026, I taught and supported undergraduate and postgraduate computing education. Recent courses included the following:
DSC401 Data Science in Practice
Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Data Science (PGDADS) · 2026
Students learn to work through practical data science problems, from preparing and exploring data to analysing results and communicating findings in an applied context.
ITC355 Business Intelligence
University of Fiji · Undergraduate teaching
Students learn to use data to support organisational decision-making through descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics, with practical R exercises, visualisation, and business applications.
ITC441 Artificial Intelligence
University of Fiji · Postgraduate teaching
Students explore artificial intelligence techniques through practical Python exercises, including genetic algorithms and optimisation problems such as timetable and scheduling design.
ITC431 Penetration Testing
University of Fiji · Postgraduate teaching
Students develop practical skills in identifying and assessing security weaknesses through ethical penetration testing, with attention to client-server systems, testing tools, responsible reporting, and mitigation.
Earlier teaching
ITC301 Software Engineering
University of Fiji · Earlier teaching
Students learn to approach software development systematically, connecting requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, and maintenance with the development of reliable software.
ITC300 Software Engineering Projects
University of Fiji · Earlier teaching
Students apply software engineering knowledge to practical projects, developing their skills in planning, implementation, teamwork, documentation, and presenting working solutions.
ITC415 Data Warehousing
University of Fiji · Earlier teaching
Students explore how data is integrated, organised, and analysed for reporting and decision-making, with practical work using Microsoft SQL Server Integration, Analysis, and Reporting Services.
ITC416 Decision Support Systems
University of Fiji · Earlier teaching
Students examine how information systems, data, and analytical models can support organisational decisions, with an emphasis on applying these approaches to practical business problems.
ITC315 Artificial Intelligence
University of Fiji · Earlier teaching
Students explore foundational artificial intelligence concepts and problem-solving techniques, considering how intelligent systems can be designed and applied to computing problems.
ITC313 Data Structures and Algorithms
University of Fiji · Earlier teaching
Students learn to organise and process data using appropriate data structures and algorithms, considering correctness, efficiency, and the choice of suitable approaches for programming problems.
I also coached students during their final-year projects and supported postgraduate teaching and research supervision.
Curriculum leadership and programme development
Beyond classroom teaching, I led and contributed substantially to curriculum redevelopment at the University of Fiji. The Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) revamp replaced the former Multimedia focus with Cybersecurity and retained two pathways: Software Development and Cybersecurity. The revised curriculum strengthened areas such as artificial intelligence, practical data science, ethical hacking and penetration testing, digital forensics, and security risk and incident response. My contribution included developing course outlines, coordinating staff allocation, supporting programme marketing and mentoring, and presenting revised programmes for institutional approval.
I also helped introduce the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Data Science (PGDADS). The eight-unit qualification was designed around practical, data-driven technology learning and a pathway towards further postgraduate study. I led or supported course development, institutional and national approval, and recognition and articulation discussions with the University of Canterbury. During those discussions, six of the eight units were recognised for cross-credit, with Big Data Management and Analytics providing an additional local focus.
The curriculum connected concepts with practical tools and methods. For example, R was integrated into Business Intelligence laboratories and Python into Artificial Intelligence and applied data science work, while keeping the learning outcomes focused on transferable skills rather than a single vendor platform.
Teaching approach
I connect theory with practical problem-solving through demonstrations, projects, coaching, and reflection. Students are encouraged to develop solutions iteratively, explain their design decisions, and consider usability, accessibility, security, privacy, performance, and deployment.
I have guided final-year capstone groups developing community web applications and supervised postgraduate research projects. Earlier student projects I coached included timetable generation, student registration and information systems, and mobile health applications. Earlier teaching also involved technologies such as Android, ASP.NET with C#, and Microsoft SQL Server Integration, Analysis, and Reporting Services.
